RUST REMOVER

KFC - COPA fLIGHT 36 KELOWNA YLW plans a Rust Remover each spring to help pilots brush off the rust from their flying and knowledge. The whole idea of the Rust Remover is to help General AVIATION PILOTS  to comply with the CAR'S currency requirements. May GA pilots also fly infrequently during the winter, so this is an excellent opportunity to brush up some important and relevant knowledge. Pilots who attend receive certification of having met the 2 year currency requirements of CAR'S.

HISTORY OF THE KFC RUST REMOVER

The Kelowna Flying Club (COPA Flight 36) is preparing to host its fourth annual Rust Remover which will be held on April 28th in a T-Hanger #9 at Kelowna International Airport (YLW). Cost for the day is just $25 which includes breakfast, coffee and lunch between 0830 (it starts at 0900) and 1400. If you are a fly-in participant, parking for your plane is available and free.

After the Rust Remover there will be a fly-out to another airport for coffee and conversation.

Ariel Tyk, who has organized the Rust Removers along with Karl Dunn, together with help from Chad Gartly, said he is excited about the Rust Remover because it can save lives. “Our goal is to provide training to keep our members and pilots safe,” said Ariel.

He said the first KFC Rust Remover was held in 2015 and drew 62 attendees, and last year’s 68, which is about average. Ariel said the club is concentrating on providing a “quality experience, and every year is better.”

He asked that all attendees register on line in advance of the day so that they will know how much food and drink to purchase.

Arial said that he hopes to get four or five speakers covering tower language, meteorology, mountain flying and survival and perhaps a speaker from Transport Canada. Attendees of the COPA approved Rust Remover will qualify for a log-book sticker showing that they participated in currency training to meet CARS 421.05 (2) (c ).

Ariel said that he is an “advocate for safety, and the club must offer consistently high quality lessons on many types of aviation safety to club members and others. Safety is very important for the club.” He said the high quality of KFC’s Rust Removers has been noticed by the airport management and also Carson Air’s flying school.

Past Rust Remover speakers have included a doctor who talked about the dangers of high level flight without oxygen, and U.S. and Canadian border guards who talked about the technicalities of flying across the border.

Ariel emphasized that the Rust Remover “is not a fund raiser, but a service to our pilots – to keep them safe.”
